First Steps
Once you’ve received your College iOS device, unbox it, plug it in to charge and power it on. Once the device has booted, you’ll see the following screen. Press the Home button or swipe up from the bottom of the screen on devices without a Home button.
Language & Country
Tap on your desired language, and then select your country.
When presented with the Quick Start screen, select Set Up Manually at the bottom.
Wireless Network
If you’re at home, select your normal home network and authenticate with your router’s password. If you’re onsite, select “Eduroam” and authenticate with your College email address and password.
Your device will now communicate with Apple’s servers and activate.
Data & Privacy
It’s recommended to read the information on this screen regarding Data & Privacy. Once you have, tap Continue.
Remote Management
Tap Next to continue.
The configuration will download and apply in the following two screens.
Location Services
Enabling this is a vital step and ensures the device date and time settings remain correct, so tap Enable Location Services.
Siri (Voice Control and Dictation)
This is an optional step you can either do now by tapping Continue or defer until later by tapping Set Up Later in Settings.
Analytics
This is another optional step, although we recommend sharing analytic data with both Apple and App Developers. Tap on Share with… or Don’t Share depending on your preference to continue.
True Tone and Appearance
If your device supports True Tone display, the Setup Assistant will show how it affects the screen here. If you wish to disable it, you can do so later in the Settings app. Tap on Continue. Now you can customise your device’s display theme. There are two options, light and dark. You can also change this later in the Settings app.
Now your device setup is complete, the following screen will display for approximately 30 seconds (although sometimes it may take up to 2-3 minutes). You don’t need to do anything; your device is now installing the necessary apps to authenticate with the College systems.
Authenticating with Intune Company Portal
Once automatically installed, the Intune Company Portal app will automatically open and the device will remain locked to this app until you’ve authenticated. Sign in with your College email address and password and authenticate with the Microsoft Authenticator app on a personal device if your account has been enabled for MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication).
Enrolling with Intune Company Portal
Once the Company Portal app has opened tap Begin to start the enrolment process.
Select the appropriate category and tap Continue – if you select the wrong one, it will affect the setup of the device and you will not be able to change it yourself afterwards.
You’ve now successfully enrolled your device. Tap on Continue and “Check device settings” will get a green tick beside it, before moving on to the next screen automatically.
When prompted about notifications, tap on Ok and then Allow.
You’ll now be at the Company Portal Apps page, where you can select optional apps to install on your device, as well as check your device settings are up to date.
Tap the Home button (or swipe up from the bottom of the screen) to return to the home screen.
Passcode
Your device must be secured with a strong passcode and it will prompt you to do so now. Tap Change Now to begin. The passcode must be a minimum of 10 characters, contain a mix of letters and numbers, and must contain at least one special character. Once you’ve typed your passcode, tap Continue and confirm the passcode again. Tap Set Passcode to finish securing the device. The passcode can be changed later in the Settings app.
Your device is now compliant and ready to use. The following apps are preinstalled for you and placed on the dock for convenience unless otherwise stated:
- Microsoft Outlook
- Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft Edge
- OneDrive
- Intune Company Portal
- Microsoft Authenticator (on home screen)
- Microsoft Defender ATP (on home screen)
Any additional and optional apps can be downloaded from the Company Portal app.
Microsoft Defender ATP (Required)
To protect you and your College issued iOS/iPadOS device from malware and web threats, Microsoft Defender ATP is preinstalled on your device. To activate the protection there are a few steps you need to take to set it up.
Setup
Find Microsoft Defender ATP on your iOS/iPadOS device. It will appear as a blue shield. Tap it to launch it.
Microsoft Defender ATP should already be installed on your device. However, if it isn’t, please open the Company Portal app and install it from the available apps.
Tap Get Started to begin the setup process.
Sign in with your College credentials when prompted.
Tap Allow to set up the required VPN connection, Allow again to confirm, and then enter your device passcode to authorise.
When prompted to allow Notifications, tap Allow. You have now completed the setup process and your device is protected.
Optional Steps
Touch ID/Face ID
If the device supports it, you can enable biometric-based authentication to unlock your device, rather than typing in your passcode every time.
Open the Settings app, select the Touch ID/Face ID & Passcode menu and type your passcode.
Toggle the iPad Unlock option and follow the onscreen instructions until the setup is complete.
You can now unlock your device with your fingerprint and add additional fingerprints as desired. Please note that when restarting your device, you will still need to provide your passcode to perform the initial unlock.
